About the Project:
Project Summary
A team of eight Santa Clara University students will be working on implementing a hive scale in a beehive in Santa Clara University's Forge Garden for master beekeeper Phillip Krieg. He will be able to access a live feed of the information collected at the hive on his phone or laptop to better maintain the beehive in the longterm and counteract swarming, bees dying from pathogens, or extreme loss of honey.

The goal of the project is to give Phillip Krieg and his team the resources to maintain more successful hives by monitoring the beehive for signs of different problems.

Our team divided into hardware and software sub teams will design and test a solar-powered scale that will communicate the weight of the hive once a day to a raspberry pie that will communicate the data to a website using an LTE card that Phil will be able to access and compare the change in weight of the beehive overtime.

Project Definition:
Phillip Kreig, the owner of HiveMinded, who serves Silicon Valley by installing and maintaining hives, needs monitoring systems installed in a beehive in the Forge Garden to monitor the amount of honey in the hive and observe how it changes over time to better maintain the bees and prevent hives from failing as HiveMinded wants to help rebuild the bee population to benefit the whole Silicon Valley community.
